Construction companies are always looking for ways to carry out their operations more effectively, efficiently, and at a lower cost.

But not many will have considered the idea of using waste food products and plants to develop robust building materials. Innovative startup’s like  BIOHM, however, are doing just that.

The BIOHM company believes it is possible to make ‘completely natural, intelligent and multi-tasking materials to replace those currently used in construction for a healthier and more sustainable future’.

A new future for construction materials?

All of the materials the company uses are carbon neutral, biodegradable, absorb toxins, and can be used to build furniture, or as an alternative for a wood-based sheet material. The idea is that all products made via this method will not only have very little impact with regard to carbon footprint, but all of the waste derivatives will able to be either composted or used within anaerobic digestion, further enhancing the user’s green credentials.

All of the waste products that are utilised by BIOHM come directly from industry rather than a waste management company. Orange peels are all collected from various staff canteens, while the grass cuttings collected from a London airport (up to 47 tonnes per week) can also be used to develop the construction materials.

It remains to be seen whether such materials will be taken up en-masse by the construction industry, but the fact that such concepts are being explored could well be a sign of what is to come.

However, until the day when such materials will make construction and commercial waste a thing of the past, it is vital to utilise other methods to keep the working environment clean and safe.

Of course, while the idea of developing a ‘cleaner’ construction sector via the use of organic materials is something that could well be beneficial in the years to come, it is something that is merely on the horizon – that day is not here yet, but still it is essential for those companies involved in construction and infrastructure projects, or in any commercial operation, to minimise waste wherever possible.
